Inaugural Lecture of Professor Victoria Burns
"We live in a world with huge, complex challenges that don’t fit into neat, subject-specific boxes. The School of Sport, Exercise, and Rehabilitation Sciences has always been proudly interdisciplinary in its approach to understanding and addressing these issues. Even within this context, though, I think my colleagues would agree that I have taken a particularly wide-ranging (some might say chaotic) path through both my teaching and research. In my inaugural lecture, I will discuss why, and how, we all need to “embrace the messiness” and share how interdisciplinary approaches can help us understand the world, and ourselves, a little better."

Vikki received her undergraduate degree and PhD here in SportExR. She was appointed as a post-doctoral research and teaching fellow in the School in 2002, became a Roberts Research Fellow in 2004, a Lecturer in 2009, Senior Lecturer in 2011, Reader in 2015, and Professor in 2020. Her career has been interdisciplinary from the beginning. Her research mainly focused on the influence of psychological factors and exercise on immune function and health, but meandered through some exercise psychology, cardiovascular psychophysiology, and metabolic immunology on the way. Over time though, she developed her interests in student development and moved into teaching-related research and leadership. Here, her scholarship brings together pedagogy and psychology to explore how we can support students to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes that they need to be effective citizens. She is particularly known for her work in civic engagement, sustainability in the curriculum, authentic assessments, and developing groupwork skills through outdoor education.
